Fall 2019 Newsletter

Dear Martin’s family,

2019 has been a year full of change, growth, answered prayers and upgrades at Martins. We have weathered many challenges, bidden farewell to several beloved members of our community who have moved on either to the Great Beyond or to new earthly homes and watched helplessly as our guests have become increasingly marooned in a rapidly changing world of high tech and even higher costs of living.

As an aging community our prayers have been answered in the form of an infusion of wonderful, creative youthful energy! Our expanding relationship with Burrito Project SF resulted in our taking them on as an umbrella group. Their joy-filled monthly burrito assembly line and celebration results in hundreds of homeless people being blessed with a delicious, unexpected evening meal delivered, more often than not, by bicycle.

Concern for the global crisis in our environment has moved us to make Martin’s greener. All the lighting in the entire building has been changed to LED and solar panels will be installed on our roof in January. Smaller changes have been made in the disposable products that we buy and use. More changes are needed but are often priced out of our reach.

Spiritually we are strong. The level of commitment, love, trust and willingness to take on the many responsibilities of our day-to-day labors has never been deeper. It is in this deepening commitment to our community of compassion that we are able to preserve a sense of hope and meaning in an increasingly mad world.

We are ever conscious of our debt of gratitude to you, our faithful supporters. You inspire us each day through your gestures of kindness and generosity. Thank you!

In Peace and Love,

Martin de Porres House of Hospitality
