As you all know the holidays are approaching and a very different holiday season it will be this year.
We will miss the giant celebration that is our annual Thanksgiving meal, due to the pandemic. We will miss our volunteers and we will miss serving our guests while listening to music and dancing together. The Thanksgiving holiday has always been a joyful time at Martins, bringing guests and volunteers together.
But don’t fret, Martins will just be doing Thanksgiving a little differently this year. In a lot of ways we have so much to be thankful for! Martins has been able to remain open and serve our guests nutritious take out meals 6 days a week. We are still able to communicate with our beautiful volunteers via FaceTime, zoom and by phone. We remain creative while facing adversity! So, lots to be thankful for.
We are planning a lovely takeout meal for Thanksgiving. Since we can’t have our volunteers come this year, we are making a special request. Normally, the Monday before Thanksgiving we make a lot of pie with a dedicated group of volunteers. That can’t happen this year, so we are asking folks to bake two to three, 9-inch pies at home. We figure if we can get enough people to pitch in, we will have enough pie for everyone we serve that day!
If you are interested you can contact Chrissy at chelena.bar@gmail.com. Please let her know how many pies you will bring and what kinds of pies you plan on making. Also, on Friday afternoons, we have been placing a little library outside Martins while we serve. We would be grateful for book donations too! Our guests love to read. We would prefer books that are in good condition if possible. Also, magazines like National Geographic are always fun. I know some of our guests would also enjoy puzzle books (e.g. crossword, word search, sudoku).
The pie and book drop off will be Monday, November 23rd from 4 to 6 pm. We will open the yard for drop off. Perhaps, you will run into a Martins friend. Of course, we ask everyone to wear masks and socially distance while in the yard.
We look forward to seeing you!
